Naglfar By: Black Angel |
The apocalypse is dawning. Yes, hell is near, for on the seventh month and
twelfth day of the year 2005, the Swedish tyrants of Black Metal, Naglfar,
will unveil the most unholy cd of their career, "Pariah". While on the way
to making this album, one of the most important members of the band was lost
as vocalist, Jens Ryden, departed for job related reasons. Not to let this
detour the band, founding member and bassist, Kristoff Olivius, assumed the
role of lead singer. Since aligning themselves with Century Media Records
the band has waged war on the world through endless touring, which has led
them to perform alongside such acts as Nile, Amon Amarth, Six Feet Under,
Deicide and various others.
For the release of "Pariah", Naglfar has conjured up the most vile of spirits to help them change the face of extreme music as we know it, standing out heavily on "Swarm Of Plagues". Lyric-wise, malevolence, hatred and brutality is taken to an entire new plane. The vocals of Olivius are ungodly and downright sacrilegious. The guitar work on this track is splendid; staggering riffs filled with crunch dance maniacally throughout whilst melodic leads spew forth so cleverly as if they came from the loins of Satan himself. The pain has merely begun, "Spoken Words Of Venom" treads onward with a vengeance like no other. High-pitched growling vocals feed feverishly off a whirlwind of double bass beats and pounding bass lines known as the rhythm section. I am very impressed with the guitar leads, they're packed with furious melody scales that leave you with a feeling of drunkenness. "The Murder Manifesto" is a suicidal trip onto the shores of madness! The vocals of this track shake the very foundation of my being, while the guitars pull me even further into the abyss with blood-curdling leads. The song has a weird, yet familiar off-timed rhythm that at times sounds like old school funk, if you can believe that! Clawing further into the psyche is "Revelations Carved Into Your Skin". This undoubtedly is the heaviest track off the album, everything is loud, lude and plagued with traces of mental anguish. I don't know whether to run or pick up an axe and ready myself for the battlefield. There are several other tracks that will no doubt shatter your spleen, but the one that moves the most from this cd is the last hymn, "Carnal Scorn & Spiritual Malice". This song embraces the darkest realms of horror, while bringing to the surface chaotic sounds of death and destruction. The vocal tracks sound like they were recorded in the pits of hell and at times I swear I hear the gnashing of teeth! The guitar riffs and leads bring visions of being torn to bits by the hands of demons. If you've got anything left of your pummeled corpse, the drum and bass lines will easily churn it to minced meat. With one final shotgun blast, the Kraken is released. The portals of hell will be opened in the next few weeks. All signs of life will fade into oblivion, as this place we call earth turns to an apocalyptic graveyard. HAIL to Naglfar for re-writing the soundtrack to the Armageddon. If you'd like to know what doom awaits you, pick this cd up and reap the whirlwind that is your mortal end. |
